Congress Speaks - Council Recapitulates

Just two weeks ago the DC City Council approved a measure that would allow bar, nightclubs and restaurants to sell alcohol between January 17th and 20th until 5am.

Big Brother on the Hill suggested the reconsider. And while staunchly defending their independence they recapitulated and amended the measure. Now bars, nightclubs and restaurants now can sell alcohol until 4am.

I think the council meets again on January 6th. Any guess on what might happen then...

The Washington DC Tourism Bureau says there are 1000s of hotel room still available for Inaugural Week.

From their website. "If you search a travel website like Expedia or Travelocity, you may find a limited number of hotels to choose from, but that doesn't mean there aren't any rooms available in the city. Many hotels are only taking reservations directly or through their corporate reservations systems. Destination DC's visitor services specialists (1-800-422-8644) can save travelers time by directing them to hotels with rooms available."

I tried the 800 number and was surprised at availability. Pricey four-day packages but still plenty rooms still available..

T.I. pleads guilty to weapons charges

Rapper T.I. has pleaded guilty to federal weapons possession charges, and is to be sentenced in one year, after completing a period of community service.

In the year that he is awaiting sentencing, T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris, must complete at least 1,000 hours of a total 1,500 hours of community service, talking to youth groups about the pitfalls of guns, gangs and drugs.

The rapper, dressed in a gray business suit, told the judge Thursday he understands the terms of the agreement.

He pleaded guilty to possession of an unregistered firearm, possession of machine guns and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Harris was arrested Oct. 13, just blocks away and hours before he was to headline the BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta.

He had been charged with possession of unregistered machine guns and silencers, as well as possession of firearms by a convicted felon. He had faced a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count.

Downloads cost one man $750 per song in RIAA suit

James V. Lewis was sued by the labels in August 2007 after an IP address flagged by MediaSentry was traced to his ISP account. Lewis never showed up in court, and the RIAA filed for a default judgment in October. Initially, the judge declined to give the labels what they were looking for, instead scheduling a hearing to discuss the case.
After a hearing held last week, the judge gave the RIAA what it was looking for: a default judgment in the amount of $3,000 plus an additional $420 in court costs. A license plate with nothing but the number "1" on it went for a record $14 million at a charity auction in the United Arab Emirates.

Saeed Khouri, a member of a wealthy Abu Dhabi family, wouldn't say how many automobiles he owned or which of them might carry the record-breaking single-digit plate.

"I bought it because it's the best number," said Khouri, whose family made its fortune in real estate. "I bought it because I want to be the best in the world."

The oil-rich UAE began auctioning off vanity license plates last May with money going to a rehabilitation center for victims of traffic accidents.

Ordinary automobile license plates issued to drivers here -- and even most other vanity series plates -- carry both Arabic and Western numerals and script, defining the issuing city and country.

Khouri's plate, however, has only the Western numeral and no letters.

The record sale surpassed the $6.8 million that was paid for an Emirati license plate at an earlier auction with the Western number 5 on it -- also without Arabic numerals or letters.

On Saturday, 90 license plates were auctioned off in all, raising a total of $24 million. The previous five such events raised more than $50 million. orginal source The World Times News Report'
